First week with the H2D: five things I would tell a new owner
Notes from seven days of printing on the new machine — what surprised me, what wasted filament, and the settings I settled on.
The H2D arrived on a Tuesday and by Friday it had printed more parts than my old machine managed in a month. These are the notes I wish someone had handed me on day one.
Give the first layer time
The textured plate that ships in the box is genuinely good, but it needs a proper wash before the first print. Dish soap, warm water, and no touching the surface afterwards. My first cube lifted a corner because I skipped this. The second one was flawless.
The five things
- Calibrate flow before you chase speed. The default profile is conservative and accurate. Print a cube, measure it, then tune.
- Keep a dedicated PETG profile. The generic profile runs part cooling too hard and layer bonding suffers.
- Dry your filament. Even brand-new spools pick up moisture in a Southern Tablelands winter.
- Learn the AMS slot mapping. I lost an hour thinking a slot was blocked when the filament had simply been loaded past the hub.
- Do the firmware update before you mount anything. It takes ten minutes and it quietens the retraction.
If a print fails twice, stop and change one variable. Changing three at once just hides the cause.
I have settled on a profile that is slower than the numbers in the videos and it has not failed a print in two weeks. The full settings are in my PETG notes — start there and adjust for your own bench.
